Creating A Ghost: Layered Wholecloth Hand Quilting

"I love hand quilting, so I wanted to innovate a way to avoid piecing while still creating a dynamic image. Also, I had a deep desire to replicate the painting technique of wiping paint off the canvas, of creating a ghost image in my quilts." -Heidi Parkes

Join Heidi Parkes in this dynamic full day handwork class. Students will learn about composition, layering, fabric selection and hand quilting while creating a 24" square quilt. Students are encouraged to bring scrap fabrics, threads and a variety of odd fiber bits that may look better layered or in tiny pieces than they do individually. These fabrics and fibers will be thoughtfully placed, covered with a transparent piece of wholecloth fabric and then hand quilted in place. Heidi's focus in hand quilting is on economy of movement, hand care, improvisation, clever knots and encouraging a personality or feeling in the stitches.

Heidi's quilt, "But, I Tried To Remember", was made with this technique for the Piecework Collective Exhibition in NYC and later won 3rd place in Handwork at the Modern Quilt Guild's annual QuiltCon in 2018. Heidi is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, was a high school art teacher for nine years and has exhibited quilts and taught across the country. She is known for approaching quiltmaking like a painting, for her bold, visible hand quilting and for her appreciation of the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi; a collaboration with nature, celebration of the ephemeral and the perfect mistake.
