Double Dutch Quilt

Two simple blocks. Four fabrics. Squares and rectangles only — and a 43” x 57” finished quilt that looks like it's moving. Learn how an on-point setting transforms straightforward piecing into a bold, graphic design that will have everyone asking how you did it!

Double Dutch is proof that complex-looking quilts don't require complicated piecing. Built entirely from squares and rectangles across two block designs, this quilt gets its energy from the way the blocks are set — placed on-point so the design shifts into peaks and valleys that weave across the quilt like a braid. Once you see it come together, you'll understand exactly why setting matters.

This class uses the Double Dutch quilt pattern by Studio R Quilts. In Session 1, you'll build the two blocks that make up the quilt. Session 2 focuses on arranging and joining those blocks on-point and assembling a completed quilt top. Additional sewing time between sessions will be needed to finish making all your blocks units and you’ll have two weeks before returning for Session 2.

In this class, you'll make two block designs:

  • Block A — a four-patch variant built from square and rectangle units

  • Block B — a four-patch center surrounded by rectangle sides and square corners

In this class, you'll learn how to:

  • Piece accurate squares and rectangles for consistently sized blocks

  • Construct two block designs that create a striking secondary pattern when combined

  • Set blocks on-point to produce the quilt's signature zig-zag movement

  • Trim blocks at the quilt edge to size — no setting triangles required

  • Assemble a complete quilt top with an on-point layout

Along the way, you'll get an overview of how on-point settings work more broadly — including when and how setting triangles are used — so you understand the technique well beyond this project.

This class is perfect for you if:

  • You want to make a quilt with bold visual impact using only squares and rectangles

  • You've been curious about on-point settings but haven't tried one yet

  • You're ready for a satisfying, confidence-building project that goes together smoothly

  • You love quilts where the secondary design surprises you as it comes together

This is a two-session class. Additional sewing time between sessions is required to complete blocks before Session 2. One registration covers both sessions.

 Supply List:
  • Sewing machine in good working order with power cord, foot pedal, and manual

  • Approximately 2 yards dark/medium fabric 1, ¾ yard dark/medium fabric 2, 1 yard light fabric 1, and 1 1/3 yard light fabric 2.  See Pre-Class Fabric Cutting Instructions below.

  • Double Dutch quilt pattern by Studio R Quilts

  • Small cutting mat, minimum 12” on one side

  • Rotary cutter, with a new, sharp blade

  • 6” x 6” or 6” x 12” acrylic ruler (or other square or rectangle size ruler)

  • Marking pen/pencil for light and dark fabrics

  • Sewing basics: thread, scissors, seam ripper, pins, etc.

Pre-Class Fabric Cutting Instructions:

Please have fabric cut prior to the start of class so we can get an immediate start on sewing.

Note: You do not need to cut all of the fabric for the quilt top prior to class. At a minimum, cut the quantities below which will provide fabric to make 5 block A and 5 block B, during the first session. For full fabric cutting requirements, please see the Double Dutch quilt pattern, small size.

Note: If you would like to piece your blocks oversized and trim down for better accuracy, cut your fabric pieces ¼” larger in each direction. Example: Cut 5 ½” x 3” rectangle, would be cut oversized at 5 ¾” x 3 ¼”. This is optional and will require additional trimming when making the quilt blocks.
