Hand Quilting 101




Learn the basics of hand quilting; supplies, marking, basting and stitching techniques. A whole cloth one block design approximately 18" square will be the class project and several stencil designs will be available for students to use in class. Both the poke/pull and rocking stitch methods will be covered. 

Supply List

  • Hand quilting needles, betweens - a size assortment such as John James quilting assortment sizes 5/10 is recommended to determine which size you prefer
  • 2 solid color fat quarters for the front and back of your quilt sandwich
  • Batting, 100% cotton with no scrim, at least 24" square
  • Quilting hoop, wooden, minimum 10"- maximum 14"
  • Thread, cotton 40 wt., one or more colors contrasting with quilt top fabric
  • Marking pencil, fine-point, Sewline or Bohin recommended, in a color contrasting with quilt top fabric
  • Thimble of your choice - if you don't have one you currently like and use, adhesive Thimble Pads or Ultra Thimble are a good first choice
  • Thread snips or embroidery scissors
Quilt stencils will be provided to share among students in class. Rotary cutter, mat and ruler will be available to use during class if needed for trimming finished quilts if needed.
 
Bring lunch or snacks or plan to take a small break and order or pick up a lunch.
