Color Theory for Quilters

Do you ever stand in front of a fabric collection and have no idea where to start? Or pull fabrics that look great individually but fall flat together in a quilt? Choosing fabrics doesn’t have to feel stressful or hit-or-miss!

Color theory gives you a framework to work from, turning fabric selection into a creative adventure instead of a guessing game. Join us to build a working understanding of how colors behave, how they interact, and how to use that knowledge to make confident, intentional fabric choices for all your quilt projects.

In this class, you’ll explore:

• Building the color wheel—primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, plus tints, shades, and tones across a full 60-color wheel
• Hue, value, and saturation—and why each one matters in fabric selection
• Color relationships—monochromatic, analogous, complementary, split complement, triadic, and tetradic combinations
• Relative value and color balance—how colors shift depending on what surrounds them
• Tools and resources to help you continue developing your quilter’s eye for color

This class is perfect for you if:

• You struggle to mix and match fabrics that work well together
• You are never quite sure what colors look good together
• You want a better understanding of how color works so you can make more confident fabric pulls

We will dive into two hands-on guided activities: identifying color relationships in real quilts to discuss what works (and why!), and working up your own unique color combinations—including colors you might not normally reach for. All materials are provided!

You’ll leave with the confidence to pull fabrics for any project with intention and ease, plus access to a 9-page digital reference guide so you can keep building your quilter's eye for color long after class ends.

No supplies are needed for this class but feel free to bring a sample of a fabric that you have difficulties incorporating into your fabric pulls.
