Basic supply list

  • Fabric shears
You will want to keep these shears ONLY for cutting fabric. The recommended brand is Fiskars.  They produce good quality, relatively inexpensive and long lasting tools.  Look for "Premier No. 8 Easy Action Bent Scissors" or "8 Inch Original Orange-Handled Scissors”

  • Trimming scissors for trimming threads, trimming into tight corners
Again, Fiskars scissors are recommended.  Look for "Micro-Tip Scissors (No. 5)" or "RazorEdge Micro-Tip Easy Action Shears (6”)".  An alternate recommendation would be Karen Kay Buckley's 4-Inch Perfect Scissors.

  • Straight pins, preferably with glass heads

  • Good quality thread
Avoid the thread that is sold as part of beginners sewing kits - it will fray and break easily. Recommended brands are Gutermann 100% polyester or 100% cotton, Coats & Clark Dual Duty XP General Purpose Thread and Aurifil Mako 100% cotton.

  • 60" Fabric or plastic measuring tape
Look for one that has metric on one side and inches on the other.  Avoid ones in retractable cases, they tend to stretch and break easily.

  • 6” metal seam guide with sliding indicator
    For measuring seam allowances

  • Marking pen
Optional.  Disappearing ink pen is ideal, recommended brand is FriXion ball point pen by Pilot.

  • Sewing box
Something to keep all your supplies together
