Machine Sewing Demystified

Session 1: All About Your Sewing Machine!
Overview of sewing machines, from the most basic to computerized machines, with a quick overview of embroidery machines/modules, sergers, and long-arm quilting machines. Discussion on parts of the machine; how it works and why it's important to keep machines clean and properly serviced. Learn how to wind a bobbin, thread the machine, replace the needle and change out presser feet. We will look at each participant's machines and talk about troubleshooting problems and issues with machine functions.

Session 2: Fun with Notions & Patterns! (No sewing machine or notions are  needed for this session, plan to take notes.)
Introduction to and discussion of notions, threads, needles, interfacing, tools & equipment to work efficiently and help make your sewing projects easier and more pleasant. We will discuss specifics needed for quilting, garment making, bags & accessories, and home decor sewing.
Learn how to read patterns for many types of projects including quilts, garments, bags, and accessories; yardage, cutting instructions, determining what size to make, abbreviations, marking, where to find pattern errata, etc.

Session 3: Time for stitching!
Make a stitch-out sampler of 7-10 stitches with your machine and discuss what stitches to use for specific projects and fabric types. You will then learn how to make a buttonhole using your machine by making a simple needle case. A kit is included for this class, students must bring their own medium/dark colored thread, and be sure to bring the buttonhole foot for your sewing machine.

Session 4: Read a Pattern & Insert a Zipper!
Let's make a bag to build our skills. We will use the Easy Zipper Case pattern which will teach how to follow a pattern, fabric cutting specifics, use interfacing, and insert a zipper. The pattern is included, students must purchase/bring fabric, interfacing, thread, and a zipper to make this project.
